ILP 2

I chose to create an Edmodo page because I like making things about my future classroom very personal. I want to teach kindergarten, but the website is directly mainly for parents, since my students are still a little young. I posted a few announcements, a quiz, and poll. I will mainly be posting for parents and occasionally post brief quizzes or polls for students.

Blog #10

  • Last Blog....What!

I think data collection tools like survey are essential to a productive classroom. I have had teachers in the past who talk way too fast or cover huge amounts of material in a very short calendar week, without checking in with students' progress. I have found myself lost and falling behind and feeling very overwhelmed. So I believe surveys on Survey Monkey or Edmodo can be very beneficial to monitor student's retention and progress. Before this semester I knew I wanted to teach elementary but I did not know a specific grade. After mentoring a kindergarten class this past semester I know that Kindergarten is where my heart is!

Now, kindergarteners are still too young to use surveys because they are just learning their letter and sight words but I believe it would be a great tool for their parents to use. Students' parents could quiz them when they get home or ask their child about his or her week and then complete a survey. I would have the option of the survey to be anonymous if they would like. Parent-teacher involvement is key to a productive learning environment. Even if i do not begin in kindergarten I believe surveys on Edmodo for 3rd grade could also be very beneficial.
I enjoyed getting to interact which my classmates on blogs because this way it was easier to talk to more people at once. I liked how hardly anyone picked the same websites or games because this way I was able to gain many new resources and ideas. Many of the things that my classmates posted I had never even heard of before like PBS TeacherLine Catalog. I will be sure to check this out when creating lesson plans in the future. I also saw a classmate post about pintersest. I use pinterest almost every single day and now I can use it to find cute and innovative lesson plans :)

I would like to know more about computer related storage devices. I feel like I am always running out of storage or not saving a file in the correct format. I would like to be able to know how to store things properly and know what resources work best on which particular storage device. I would hate to lose a lesson plan or not be able to download an eBook correctly for my class.

I plan to continue to follow account related to teaching and technology. When I get a job at a school I want to create some sort of teacher blog for all of the staff member to be able to interact without another and help with lesson plans. The school may already have something like this set up, but I want to go the extra mile and create something that goes beyond an email chain.

    •     A flipped classroom can mean that the typical learning style of coming to class and listening to a teacher lecture to get your information is reversed. Students can watch brief videos or lesson about the material at home or on their own time before coming to class and that way it can save time. Since students have already be introduced to the material before class, this leaves more time for discussion and activities with their teacher. Students learn better when a teacher is able to walk them through an exercise rather than just listening to them talk about a concept. This can be used through presentations, emails, videos, or blogs (234 Technology for Distance Delivery). The flipped classroom goes hand in hand with distance education. This way school can be taken outside of the physical building and applied to real world activities in real time. Technology is so advanced today and this is such a great outlet.

I will definitely be using Twitter in my future classroom. I have enjoyed using it for the purposes of this class and can see how it could be beneficial to fuel classroom discussion. I like twitter because students will have the opportunity to customize their own page and can use hashtags to interact with each other or be able to find information out about a subject very quickly. I like how Twitter can be used to find out in real time things that are going on in the world and in our community. A benefit of twitter is that it only allows 140 characters per tweet, this way I will encourage students to think critically how to summarize what they are saying. Twitter can be super fun and interactive and I think it would be a great source for students to use, considering most of them already have one anyway.

I enjoyed how FUN this assignment was. I had a great partner who I worked on this with and we had fun sharing our creative ideas. I am a big advocate of games. I personally learn better about a topic if I am quizzed on it immediately after learning. For example, if I just learned a new topic and think quiz myself on it, I am basically going over my notes quickly and saying to myself got it, got it, got it, oh I still don't understand this part, I need to go over it again. If I don't constantly check myself as I am learning a topic I will fall behind and become overwhelmed. I learned how easy it was to create a game through Powerpoint and next time I will try a different game and try to add in more of my own sounds effects or funny gifs. I will definitely be bringing in this tool to my future classroom to make learning fun!

  • I definitely think that gesture-based multitouch displays are the most promising for education!  I have become very familiar with such technologies like the iPad and the iPhone and most people in schools have as well. In this day and age practically everyone has a smart phone or some sort of gesture-based electronic or tablet. It blows my mind to see elementary school kids walking around with iPhones, I didn't even get my first smart phone until 9th grade (whhhatttt, I know right). I have heard of certain classrooms that have a class set of iPads and I have heard nothing but goos results with them. I know electronic devices can be so cool and exciting to kids. And it is very practical because using these devices can easily bring a whole classroom together "virtually". There are so many different teacher/ school applications that can be used on these devices and it can easily be used to put everyone on the same program or on the same page.

  • I also think the augmented reality is super cool and provides a new and innovative way to take students on realistic field trips, but to be honest it still freaks me out a bit. I know, I have to get with the times. But I want students to go outside and experience the world, not just through an electronic screen.

The digital divide is a term that has been used to discuss the gap between those who do and do not have access to technology and the internet. I am blessed enough to own my own laptop and have wifi where I live. As I have mentioned in my previous blogs I am not the best in all things technology and basically only know how to use Microsoft word and Powerpoint. But I know I have great resources on campus that I can go to and get help from.

It is important to note that all children do not come from the same type of home and not everyone has access to the internet. It is great if you can use the computer to implement some lesson during the day, but giving homework online or an assignment that requires internet access outside of school is not always a good idea. Some students come to school to escape their troubles at home and school is a safe haven for them, so it is important to really know your students and where they come from. You never want to single out a student and say, "raise your hand if you don't have a computer at home" or "is this going to be a problem for anyone". Just because a student doesn't have access to the internet just like most people, it does not mean that they should be penalized or looked down upon. You may think to yourself just go to the library but the students may not have a way of getting there. It is important to always build up your students and never make them feel inadequate.

I have never created a show before through Powerpoint so this was really neat. It took me a while to figure out how to add in my own audio at first. I think can be really helpful in my future classroom. I liked this assignment because it took PowerPoint one step further. I think this will also hold students attention longer.

ILP "Design" - Creating and Identifying Shapes Prezi

Independent Learning Project

I chose to design a Prezi because I think they are super cool, fun, and interactive. I also knew that kids would love to see the way the screen bounces around and the way you can zoom in and out on certain things. It is a lot more fun than another boring PowerPoint presentation. I chose a standard that talked about learning how to make shapes and recognize them. I chose 3 of the main shapes that we use because I knew it would be most familiar to them to pick up on. I tried to color coordinate everything for all my visual leaners out there (like me). I enjoyed making it, so I hope you enjoy it. I tried to design this as if I were teaching a class and talking them through it.

  •        In my opinion powerpoint is the most effective tool to use when teaching something. I have had professors in the past who did not have any sort of powerpoint and just lectured and talked at the class for an hour and a half. No fun. Bloom's taxonomy is very revered in education and powerpoint is a great way to express this. Let's use language arts as an example.

Remember: Before we begin a new book, I will post some of the definitions of the new words we will be discovering tin the book. I will be sure to provide some images or clipart to help better explain the new words.
Understand: After we read a chapter we will pause and have a group discussion and go over what we just read. I will take the ideas that were spoken and organize them into a cool graphic on the powerpoint.
Apply: I would ask the kids to pick a partner and and either discuss it or act out the situations in the book. This way they are putting what they learned into their own perspective. I could have them create a slide or two. So each group would get their own chapter and then I would put all the slides together and then we would have nice powerpoint book.
Analyze: I would then show the students how to use venn diagrams to compare and contrast things that happen in the book. Again, I would take their work and put it nicely together into a new, fun, interactive powerpoint.
Evaluate: After we go over all of out slides that the students have created, I will then give the students a quiz and test their knowledge. Part of the assessment will be to give another example or scenario of something similar that has happened in the book.
Create: I will then assign the students a new topic that has to do with the book. For example, I will tell the students to research something about their favorite character or part of the book and then they will show me a new product of their own!

In one of my other classes we have discussed who to work with students with exceptionalities quite a bit. I personally believe tools like word predication and text-to-speech programs can be very helpful to many students on a spectrum. Word prediction can be very useful with students who are physically impaired and have trouble with spelling. This eliminates the number of keystrokes needed to complete their thought. Recorded books are also helpful for young leaners who are still having trouble reading but when they hear the story they can better comprehend it. Different input devices that can also be useful for students may include bigger keys, touch screens, etc.
  •       I hope to be able to work with the visual impaired when I am older and I am happy to know there are new things available for them in this day and age. Screen magnification devices, screen readers, and braille printers are going to help them tremendously! I personally have had to use some of the adaptive technologies in my schooling and I have known some people who have had to use some of the visual adaptive technologies. A problem I may run into while using such technologies in my classroom is that some of the technology may malfunction or may not specifically be what my student needs.

  •        I really enjoyed the web design assignment. I used Weebley to create my website and I was so pleased with the final results. I liked all of the different layout options it gave and how easy it was to manipulate. In the future I will for sure be using the website again and I will incorporate some of my own pictures as well.
